The Lake Is the Reason

Chain food has its place, especially when you are passing through.

History You Can Walk To

The Okeechobee Battlefield is a short drive from town. On 25 December 1837, Seminole forces met US troops under Zachary Taylor in one of the largest battles of the Second Seminole War. It is not a theme park. It is a field with a marker, and it rewards people who can stand still and think about what happened there.

The town itself is not old by Florida standards, incorporated just over a century ago in 1915. But the lake and the land were here long before that, and the Seminole name for the water predates every paved road in the county.

The One Weekend That Matters

The Speckled Perch Festival and Parade is the oldest celebration in Okeechobee. It began by honouring the fishing industry with a parade and a fish fry in Flagler Park at the height of tourist season. The Saturday parade still steps off at 10am. If you are in town for it, you will see the lake community doing what it does best: gathering, eating, and not making a fuss.

Okeechobee is not a destination you stumble into by accident, but it is a useful base. Stuart is 41 miles east and hosts the Stuart Boat Show. Sebastian is 44 miles north with the Sebastian Clambake Lagoon Festival. Arcadia is 71 miles west and runs the Arcadia All-Florida Championship Rodeo. Farther out, Oviedo is 101 miles north for Great Day in the Country, and Everglades City is 103 miles south for the Everglades Seafood Festival. Altamonte Springs, 105 miles north, has Red Hot & Boom.
